If you have had braces in the past or know someone who has, then you’ll also know there’s a seemingly endless list of foods you can’t eat or drink. Anything sticky, sugary, gummy or hard is on the “don’t eat” list. Everything from chewing gum to carrot sticks may be a no-go with braces.

Before Dr. Porter was the very first orthodontist on Prince Edward Island, he received his B.Sc. from Mount Allison University, and then his dental training at Dalhousie University’s Dental School. When he completed his DDS, he began practicing with the Prince Edward Island Children’s Dental Program. During this time, he travelled in a mobile dental clinic to schools on the western side of the Island, which fostered his love for the province.
He then trained in orthodontics at the University of Manitoba. He returned to PEI to practice orthodontics shortly after during which time he was also teaching at the Dalhousie University Dental School and working at the IWK Children’s Hospital in the Cleft Palate Clinic as an orthodontic consultant. A few years later, he decided to concentrate on orthodontics full-time.
Dr. Porter’s specialization and on-going focus in his continuing education is on malocclusions and dental-facial abnormalities. His expertise has allowed him to work closely with a range of oral surgeons, dentists, paediatricians, and plastic surgeons, many of whom now refer cleft lip and palate patients to him. He’s well-known for making “Happy Smiling Faces” his life’s mission, recognizing the importance of taking a team approach when treating patients and loves to mentor young dentists and orthodontic specialists.
When he isn’t helping patients, he can be found enjoying some of his favourite hobbies like wine making and gardening, or passing time outside gardening or riding his Harley! He also loves spending time and travelling with his friends and family.
