Best Solutions for Crooked Teeth: Traditional, Invisible or Invisalign Braces?

Dreaming about a straighter smile? Maybe you never had braces when you were younger and now, as an adult, you feel self-conscious about your crooked front teeth. Or, you may have had braces when you were younger, but your teeth have moved a bit since then and you’d like to re-straighten your teeth. From choosing the right orthodontist to evaluating different treatment options and cost, just thinking about straightening your teeth can seem a bit daunting!

Scheduling an initial consultation with an orthodontist to discuss your specific treatment needs and evaluate your options is a great first step. But before you sit down with an orthodontist, you might be interested in the different treatment options currently available, including what to expect, what the treatment typically costs, and any pros or cons associated with this treatment choice.

For many patients with mild to moderate straightening needs, the decision comes down to traditional braces, invisible braces or Invisalign. Here’s a quick overview to get you started:

Traditional Braces

Traditional metal braces are likely what comes to mind when you think about orthodontic treatment, and they’re likely the option you’ve seen most often. These days, traditional metal braces are smaller and more comfortable than ever. They typically consist of stainless steel brackets and wires. They can also be combined with things like a chain, rubber bands/elastics and other appliances, depending on your needs. Traditional metal braces can treat a full range of cases from mild to complex, and are quite affordable.

Invisible Braces

When most people think about braces, they imagine a mouth full of visible wires and brackets. Invisible braces are a discreet alternative to conventional metal and wire braces. Here’s the good news: braces have advanced a lot since most of us were in high school! With clear braces, ceramic brackets are used, which are similar to metal braces. Instead of using conventional metal brackets, however, these braces are clear or tooth-colored, in order to blend in with your smile. Like conventional braces, a wire will still be used to connect these brackets.

Invisalign uses a set of virtually invisible aligners to gradually shift your teeth into correct alignment. Invisalign aligners are custom-made for each patient to move their teeth into a sequence that’s pre-determined by your orthodontist. Approximately every two weeks, you’ll change to a new aligner. Over the course of treatment, these aligners will eventually shift your teeth into place.

As the name suggests, Invisalign is a virtually “invisible” treatment approach that’s extremely discrete. Additionally, aligners can be removed at meal time and for cleaning, which means you won’t face the food restrictions normally associated with braces. Patients do need to remain committed to wearing Invisalign aligners 20 to 22 hours a day for optimal results. If you’re concerned about staying disciplined and wearing these aligners, a permanent fixed solution may be a better option.
