During your orthodontic treatment it is extremely important that your oral hygiene be superb. Braces and other orthodontic appliances provide more areas for food and plaque to become trapped. This can lead to an increased risk of cavities, decalcification and gum disease. Let us help you prevent it! The video is definitely the best way to learn the do's and don'ts during your treatment, but we’ve also listed out the steps below if that’s more convenient for you!

Do's

  1. Brush your teeth at least four times a day, after every meal and snack, and before going to bed. we have a video designed to help you brush the right way with braces.
  2. Floss at least once a day to keep your gum tissues healthy. we also prepped a video on that topic since we know it can be tricky with braces.
  3. Keep on seeing your dentist for regular check-ups and cleanings during your orthodontics treatment.

Don'ts

  1. Don't eat any sticky, sugary foods such as gummy bears, jube-jubes, licorice, marshmallows, caramel, taffy or sticky candy bars. these foods are very hard to remove from around your braces and appliances, and also increase your risk of cavities.
  2. Don't eat hard foods like jaw breakers, hard candies, mints or nuts, unpopped popcorn kernels, and ice cubes.
  3. Raw fruits and vegetables, such as apples and carrots, will have to be cut into very small pieces before eating.
  4. Chew on pens and pencils. yes, these aren’t food but they can still damage your braces or appliances by breaking wires or removing brackets.

If you have any questions about your braces or appliances, please feel free to call us at the office or discuss it with us at your next visit.
