The Research
In 2006, Manchester University’s Professor Kevin O’Brien led a research study that found children as young as eight years old were happier, less anxious, and were no longer prone to teasing after receiving corrective treatment. With straighter, healthier teeth, children will receive a boost of confidence and are more self-aware. Their newfound, positive perception of themselves is directly correlated to their new, straight smiles.
The study's participants included children aged eight to ten, half of whom were fitted with braces and the rest received no corrective treatment. Of those who wore braces, 80% had their teeth successfully straightened after 15 months. The participants were surveyed both before and after treatment, and those who received treatment scored higher on markers for emotional and social well-being.
Getting Started
When it comes to exploring braces or corrective alternatives for your child, earlier is always better. The Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends that children get checked by an orthodontist by the age of seven, when your child’s teeth will have developed enough to indicate issues with jaw growth and emerging teeth. Although dentists are able to problem-spot and suggest orthodontic consultations, orthodontists, with additional years of specialized education, are able to immediately locate and diagnose problems, offer solutions for prevention, and begin proactive, successful treatments for dental and facial irregularities. An early start helps to prevent future health issues, potential surgeries or additional treatments, and provides your child with a bright start to oral hygiene and health. Fortunately, the orthodontists at Docbraces use advanced technology in their treatment methods, offer affordable payment plans and can recommend a variety of options for the care your child needs.
