Doctor Spotlight: Meet Dr. Mary-Ellen Polymeris

Dr. Mary-Ellen Polymeris’ childhood dreams of wanting to be a “doctor for kids” manifested into a reality in her adult life. As an Orthodontist she has become a doctor for not only children and teens, but patients of all ages; and she has been doing it for over a decade!

Dr. Polymeris obtained both her Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacology and Doctor of Dental Surgery degree with Honours from the University of Toronto. In recognition of graduating among the top 5% in her class, she was inducted into the Tau Tau Chapter of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society. Dr. Polymeris completed a general practice residency at the University of Alberta Hospital and practised general dentistry in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) before going on to complete her orthodontic specialty training and Masters of Clinical Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario.

Now, Dr. Polymeris is thrilled to be transforming smiles in Toronto and the GTA at docbraces Toronto MidtownToronto Midtown

Combining passions to create confident smiles

Why did Dr. Polymeris choose orthodontics? “Orthodontics allows me the opportunity to combine my love of art, science and technology to improve the lives of patients by helping them smile with confidence,” she shares.

In her view, being a good Orthodontist includes forging good relationships with her patients. She shares that she makes “every effort to ensure that patients leave our office after completing treatment with not only a great smile, but also fond memories of their time spent with their orthodontist.” She really takes all the time she can to get to know each and every patient and to make the treatment as enjoyable as possible.

How Dr. Polymeris approaches Orthodontics

From Dr. Polymeris’ perspective, orthodontic care should always be patient- and family-centred with a clear understanding of expectations and goals. She understands and believes that “one size does not fit all when it comes to orthodontics.” In reality, all patients are different. Because of this she approaches treatment plans individually and tailors them to fit the needs of the patient. She carefully considers all factors including growth and development, timing to maximize results while minimizing treatment length, appliance selection, and lifestyle.

She is inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci’s words, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” Her philosophy allows her patients to have the best results with the least amount of stress.

In terms of teamwork, Dr. Polymeris looks to another famous quote from Greek philosopher Aristotle, that reads, “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” She believes that kindness and working together allows her team at docbraces Toronto Midtown to achieve their all-encompassing goal of providing excellent care for patients.

Outside of work and in the local community

Beyond helping patients smile confidently with braces and Invisalign, Dr. Polymeris is active in her local and professional communities. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Asclepius Dental Society - a non-profit, professional organization that facilitates educational, philanthropic and networking opportunities for Canadian dentists of Hellenic descent. In addition, she has been a part of the planning committee for the Hellenic Professionals’ Gala - a fundraising event in support of academic scholarships for deserving Hellenic-Canadian dental, law and medical students. She has also participated in the remote areas dental outreach program, where she provided dental care to the rural and underserved communities of northern Alberta.

Her desire for helping others extends beyond orthodontics, as she is also extremely passionate about forwarding cancer research. She supports both the Appendix Cancer Pseudomyxoma Peritonei Research Foundation, as well as the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

In her free time, Dr. Polymeris enjoys travelling, cooking, baking, staying active, and reading lots of personal development books. One of her absolute favourites is The Secret Letters of the Monk Who Sold His Ferrari by Robin Sharma. If given the chance to meet anyone, living or dead, she’d choose Steve Jobs. This is a testament to her love for inspiring individuals who dream big and think outside the box.
